2. What information we collect

The information we collect depends on how you use our website.

Website user accounts

If you register for an account on our website, we collect your name and email address. These details are used to create and administer your account.

Contact forms

If you contact us through a website contact form, we collect the information you provide, which may include your name, email address, subject and message.

We use this information to respond to your enquiry and deal with any matters you raise.

Contact your MP and campaign letters

If you use our campaign facility to write to your Member of Parliament (MP), we may collect:

  • Your name.
  • Your email address.
  • Your postcode.
  • The letter you choose to send.

Your postcode is used to identify your MP and constituency. The campaign facility may use information from the UK Parliament’s published data to identify the relevant MP and their parliamentary contact details.

You can review and edit your letter before submitting it.

Your name, email address and letter will be sent to the relevant MP. Your email address will be included as the reply-to address so that the MP’s office can respond to you directly. The message will be sent through the Socialist Labour Party website’s email service.

Please do not include sensitive personal information in your letter unless it is necessary for the matter you are raising.

3. How we use your information

We use personal information for the following purposes:

  • To create and administer website user accounts.
  • To respond to enquiries submitted through our contact forms.
  • To operate the MP lookup and campaign-letter facility.
  • To send campaign letters to the MP selected by the person using the facility.
  • To maintain the security and proper operation of the website.
  • To investigate technical problems, misuse or suspected abuse of our services.
  • To comply with applicable legal obligations.

We do not intend to use information collected through the MP campaign facility to send unrelated campaign emails. If we wish to use personal information for an additional purpose, we will consider the applicable data-protection requirements and provide any information or choices required by law.

4. Our lawful basis for using personal information

Data-protection law requires us to have a lawful basis for processing personal information.

Depending on the activity, we may rely on the need to provide a service requested by you, our legitimate interests in operating the website and responding to correspondence, or compliance with a legal obligation.

We will consider the appropriate lawful basis for each activity and explain it where required.

5. Who we share information with

We do not sell personal information.

Depending on how you use the website, information may be processed by:

  • Your MP’s office: when you choose to send a campaign letter, the relevant MP receives your name, email address and letter.
  • Website and email service providers: providers involved in hosting, maintaining and delivering website forms and emails may process information as necessary to provide their services.
  • Public authorities or other recipients: where disclosure is required by law or is otherwise lawful and necessary.

We aim to share only the information needed for the relevant purpose.

Once your letter has been delivered, the MP’s office handles the correspondence under its own data-protection responsibilities. Its subsequent use of your information is not controlled by the Socialist Labour Party.

6. How long we keep information

We keep personal information only for as long as it is reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, taking account of legal obligations and any need to resolve disputes or investigate misuse.

Website account information may be retained while an account remains active and for a reasonable period afterwards where necessary.

Contact-form messages and campaign correspondence may be retained for as long as needed to respond to enquiries, maintain appropriate records and deal with any related issues.

We will review our retention arrangements and delete or anonymise information when it is no longer required.

7. Website security

We take reasonable steps to protect personal information against unauthorised access, loss, misuse or disclosure.

Access to website administration and stored information is restricted through appropriate account and security controls. However, no website or method of transmitting information over the internet can be guaranteed to be completely secure.

Please use a secure email address and take care when sharing personal information through the website.

WordPress and the plugins used on the website may also process technical information needed to provide their functions.

Any non-essential cookies or tracking technologies will be handled in accordance with applicable legal requirements. Further details should be provided where required by a cookie notice or consent mechanism.
